When your cycling desires run the gamut from dependable everyday transportation to unique one-of-kind projects, Surly is your brand.
Back in the mid 1990s a small but growing group of bikers in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota area were getting into singlespeeds. Most adult frames back then were old cruiser frames, not up to the abuse of real off-road riding, and the few singlespeed components available were less than ideal.
A number of these Twin Cities riders worked for Quality Bicycle Products, a large U.S. bike parts distributor, and with this connection came the possibility of producing the equipment they needed. They pitched their idea and the head honcho went for it, so they designed and produced their first component, the Singleator 2000. It worked well and sold well, and the next project was a singlespeed-specific frame, the 1 X 1 Rat Ride.
With its success their company was really underway so they set three goals: make stuff that’s fun to ride; design it well so it’s easy to use, versatile and durable; and keep it affordable. Next, they gave the idea a name: Surly. It wasn’t a wild swing at some target demographic, it was who they were.
Surly's innovative bikes and components are truly rider-driven. From the handy, station wagon on wheels Big Dummy (below) to the ride-over-anything, 3.7-inch-wide-tired Pugsley (above) to the insanely versatile, S & S coupled, pack it in your suitcase Travelers Check (right), Surly's bikes are designed for riders by riders. And, their parts are well thought out as well, with unique touches that make them easy to use and long lasting.
